Of my Reading Days, Reading and reading
I always had a passion for reading: Reading anything that I could read my hands on right from my childhood. I loved reading fiction and thrilling works. I never enjoyed reading those boring and hard science books. I would read anything that would make me smile, something that I would relate with, something that would make me feel like I was part of this world. In as much as the fact the books were hard to come by while schooling, I had masters a phrase that I got from Chinue Achebe's work that " Since men have learnt to shoot without missing, Birds have learnt to fly without perching."
I deviced methods that would help me find books to read. I would read, and read and the more i read the more my appetite became insatiable. I was greedy. Then I went to secondary school. By the time I stepped into class, novels were my friends. After 2 years in High school, I made up my mind that I wanted to be a writer. But as fate would have it, that would just be that: A Dream. But nevertheless i never gave up on reading. In school I was the role model for all teachers, being exemplied to other students for my prolific reading skills and mastery of English. I don't have to tell you that the school i went to, practically English was exactly what it is" A Foregin language. I was lucky to have learnt and masters lots of skills, lessons and experience through books.I was able to interact with people from various parts of the world, : students in American Universities, Us Cops, Lawyers, Engineers at work, the very cultures of Africa and Kenya and very many other.I believe this experience better placed me to understand very many things in the world that my colleagues wouldn't understand. I am reminded of an instance in the middle of my KCSE Exams I was reading a novel and my friend came to me asking me whether I gad read everything till I had nothing more to read to which I just told him I loved to read. Anf=d funny thing is I the essay that I wrote in my English exam had that novels storyline
I wanted to be a writer, a lawyer but never an Engineer. I nevertheless studies sciences and mathematics in my High school majors to which I excelled. I was the master of mastery in my class. I was the master of all course: I was the Physics geek, the Biology Consultant, the English and Grammar Spell checker and the Maths wizard. I believe all this skills all come from my reading habits. reading helped me understand questions, it helped comprehend and contextualise scenarios, it helped me be a critical thinker and evaluate problems well. In short, I excelled in my Final High school Exams and qualified to university. As fact would have it, I ended up taking up an Engineering Course and with campus came the freedom: Movies replaced my reading habits, technology was moving fisrt, and lastly I ended up working and being in tech staff.
My blog would then become my only solace, I started trying to write, I thought I had a sense of humor but my friends told me that i should give it all up. As such, I try to write, to write issue that people would relate to, Just like I loved reading and relating to those books, novelas, novels, sequels etc that I would relate to...hence this blog and this ONE too .....
